Locations
A location is a place. GPS lives here. Records do not require one.
A location is a place you return to: a house, a room, a job site, a pipeline crossing, a GPS point.
It is not the thing you work on. That is an asset. It is not the reading. That is a record.
Home and Locations
- Home — last work and nearby locations on this device, for the active project.
- Locations — the list and the map. Open a location for its record.
The Locations tab also has Assets. Locations and assets sit side by side on the project. An asset is not a child of a location.
Create a location
- Open Locations.
- Stay on the Locations pane.
- Tap New location.
- Enter a name.
- Save.
GPS is optional. You can set it from a fix, the map, or typed coordinates. You can also save a named place with no coordinates.
You can also create a location from Point on Field when GPS has a fix. See Phone.
GPS
The location holds the coordinates of the place.
A record can also hold the coordinates of the observation. Those two are not the same. A walking survey can file many GPS-tagged readings under one location.
Fieldeng shows a fix when the device has one. It does not invent coordinates. A reading without a fix is still a reading. It is not a mapped point.
Project scope
Locations on the list belong to the active project. Switch projects in the menu if the place you want is on another job.
Locations with no project yet attach to the project you just made active.
Site as a word
Some jobs still say site. The model is location. A CP domain can call a location a site in speech without changing the data.
