Frame Efficiency

Modeled payload rate after a stated frame/protocol overhead. Not a universal Ethernet number.

Networking & Communications

Modeled payload rate after a stated frame/protocol overhead. Not a universal Ethernet number.

App id: NET-13. Reference version 1.0.

How to fill it

Fill the inputs. The tool shows the outputs.

On the tool screen, Calc is the working sheet. Presets stores values you reuse. Reference is the formula, assumptions, and provenance below.

Formula

efficiency = payload / (payload + overhead); payload rate = line rate × efficiency

Inputs

NameUnit
Payload sizeB
Overhead sizeB
Line rateGbit/s

Outputs

NameUnit
Efficiency (hero result)%
Overhead%
Effective payload rateMbit/s

Diagnose

This tool does not attach diagnose observations.

Assumptions

  • Overhead is an input, not a built-in Ethernet/IP/TCP constant.
  • Does not model interframe gap, preamble, or VLAN tags unless included in overhead.

Provenance

  • Simplified on-wire efficiency model. Encapsulation varies by protocol and PHY framing.
